Teachers’ satisfaction
Data from the survey indicated that most of the participants were dissatisfied with the recognition
they received for their efforts from their school communities (90%) and society (92). However, re-
sponses related to the status given by the government showed more variability; 59% were satisfied,
22% were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied, and 19% were dissatisfied. Survey data also indicated
that they were dissatisfied with the professional development opportunities given by professional
associations (75%), educational institutions (81%), and their own work places (90%). Responses of
satisfaction related to working conditions were also variable; 43% were satisfied with the benefits
received and 19% were satisfied with the physical environment of their schools. During the group
interview, the discussion focused on the contradictory feelings caused by the government policies to
develop English language proficiency and the lack of effective support for teachers to succeed.
Conclusions
Results indicate that EFL teachers were dissatisfied and demotivated for a variety of reasons. They did
not seem to be in the best conditions to successfully put into practice the National English Strategy.
Local education authorities should address the problem if the aim of the strategy is to be achieved.
