ÉTAT DE LOS DERECHOS HUMANOS EN LAS RELACIONES FAMILIARES

In accordance with the Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (2014), corruption is
understood as the practice -particularly in public organizations- of the use of the functions

and means of those for the benefit, economic or otherwise, of their managers.

On the other hand, Transparency International (2009: 14) defines it as the "abuse of power

                  for its own benefit".

Similarly, Acción Ciudadana (2015) conceives it as situations of favoritism and abuse of
power, which occurs when a person or a public official, morally and legally bound to work

for a social interest, changes it for an interest or benefit own. It is, in other terms, a force or

power with the capacity to influence and win wills, to obtain personal improvements.

As for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC, for its acronym in English,
                  2015):

Corruption is a complex social, political and economic phenomenon that affects all the

countries of the world. In different contexts, corruption harms democratic institutions, slows

economic development and contributes to political instability. Corruption destroys the

foundations of democratic institutions by distorting electoral processes, undermining the
rule of law and delegitimizing bureaucracy [...] The concept of corruption is broad. It

includes bribery, fraud, misappropriation or other forms of diversion of resources by a public

official, but is not limited to it. Corruption can also occur in cases of nepotism, extortion,
influence peddling, improper use of privileged information for personal purposes and the

purchase and sale of judicial decisions, among several other practices.
