In recent years there have been significant changes both in the scientific area and in the techni-
cal area; these changes have not only been quantitative but also qualitative. This has produced
a transformation in social and productive processes through the incorporation of new tech-
nological elements, making new paradigms of knowledge and information appear in society.
Therefore, a constant and general revision of the curricular contents is required to detect if the
knowledge, values and skills that are intended to develop in the student are those required by
the current society and if the internationalization of the economy is responded to.
The current curriculum should plan the training of an individual who is qualified to provide their
services not only at the national level but also internationally, with a transnational approach,
outside the borders and with command of various languages that facilitate communication and
introduction in the globalizing culture that guarantees a successful professional practice. To
achieve this, substantial changes are required, including changes in the curricular model in the
sense of overcoming the so-called rigid curriculum to make way for the semi-flexible, flexible
or modular curriculum (Association for Computing Machinery [ACM]/Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers [IEEE], 2016).
The Bachelor of Engineering in Computing is part of the Faculty of Engineering, belonging
to the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEM). The last in-depth review of the
aforementioned bachelor’s degree was carried out in 2004. Therefore, the best way to observe LA INVESTIGACIÓN COMO VÍNCULO ENTRE EDUCACIÓN Y SOCIEDAD
the curricular changes that have existed since the Bachelor of Engineering in Computing ‘s
UAEM curriculum was approved in 2016 is to make a comparison between the guide curricular
CE2016, proposed by the ACM/IEEE, and the curriculum approved by the Faculty of Engineer-
ing in 2004, allowing analyzing the current trend of Computer Engineering to give recommen-
dations for curricular change.
