EL ETAT DE LOS DERECHOS HUMANOS EN EL DESARROLLO SOSTENIBLE
Sustainable development seeks to meet the needs of the present without mortgaging those of
future generations, to find a way to solve today's social and environmental problems and
learn to live in a sustainable way (UNESCO for Latin America and the Caribbean, 2017).
In these key matters, the university must recover its qualified voice from research and its
links with society. It must examine the institutional mission in perspective of the challenges
of this century and re-edit it, if necessary. This will require a highly educated academic
community, willing to address the analysis needed for its application in the social context and
an appropriate intellectual climate. The great problems of mankind, still unresolved, must be
the inspiration of the institutional project and the strategic planning of educational centres.
They should seek the greater involvement of the actors of the academic community, students
and groups linked to higher education in search of a habitable and more inclusive world.
The complexity of the social dynamics with its incomprehensible paradoxes, important
advances in Latin America towards the recognition of fundamental human rights, facing
situations such as those that now gain territory, violence motivated by racism, xenophobia,
high rates of feminicide, child abuse and attacks to freedom of expression confirm that
education must be seen beyond a matter of coverage or access, as expressed by Granados
(2016).
The conviction in the emancipatory role of education and its transforming power in
individual and collective conduct must come through actions. They should be expressed in
behaviours adjusted to the ethical commitment to do the right things, to maintain a clean
conscience as a result of honest acts and the prioritizing of collective interests over individual
